Colectica is happy to announce the release of Colectica for Excel today. Colectica for Excel is a free addin for Microsoft Excel and works with Excel 2007, 2010, and 2013. It allows users who do not have Stata or SPSS installed on their machines to open files saved in .sav and .dta formats directly in Microsoft Excel. In addition to data import, Colectica for Excel also imports additional metadata that may be contained in the file such as variable data types and code lists. This additional metadata information is stored natively inside the workbook using open standards for data documentation.
"Allowing users to open Stata .dta and SPSS .sav files from within Excel can be a great time saver" stated Jeremy Iverson, a Partner at Colectica. He continued "The additional metadata, stored using the open metadata standard for data documentation is an added bonus for the user."
The software implements leading open standards including the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) Lifecycle version 3 and ISO 11179. Colectica for Excel can export your data documentation to an XML file in the DDI Lifecycle metadata format, the standard for data documentation. These standard XML files can be opened and edited from Colectica Designer, Colectica Express, or other DDI applications.
Additional software tools from Colectica enable documenting of data, data collection, survey methodologies, survey instruments, questions, variables, and datasets. Colectica Repository manages changes to the recorded information and allows multiple people and groups to work together on a shared system. Colectica Portal allows for publication of this recorded information on the web. All of these products use open standards to allow for interoperability with other tools. Colectica products, training on open standards, and customized software solutions are available through www.colectica.com .
