Colectica's DDI tools are built on the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI), which is formally certified as the international standard ISO/PAS 25955.
The core foundation of all Colectica tools is DDI Lifecycle, the broadest and most comprehensive standard in the entire DDI family. DDI Lifecycle is specifically designed to document and manage metadata across the complete research data lifecycle, from initial planning and conceptualization through data collection, processing, storage, discovery, dissemination, and long-term archiving. It provides unmatched depth and flexibility for complex, longitudinal, linked, and multi-study projects.
While DDI Lifecycle is the engine behind Colectica, we recognize the importance of legacy data and simpler documentation needs. Colectica also offers full import and export support for DDI Codebook, the simpler, study-level version of DDI. This allows organizations to easily migrate older DDI Codebook documentation into the more powerful Lifecycle environment without losing information.
Colectica is aligned with the new model-based specification DDI Lifecycle version 4. This version represents a complete modernization of the standard using a model-first development approach. It delivers the same rich content as previous versions while adding powerful new capabilities and improved maintainability.
A key advantage of DDI Lifecycle 4 is its native support for multiple serialization formats:
These options enable flexible integration with modern semantic web technologies, JSON-based APIs, traditional XML workflows, and UML modeling tools.
DDI Lifecycle is organized around the major functional areas of the research data lifecycle. It comprehensively addresses:
This extensive coverage makes DDI Lifecycle the most complete and future-proof choice for metadata management.
Colectica also implements the ISO 11179 standard for metadata registry functionality. This standard is fully incorporated into DDI Lifecycle and plays a central role in DDI Lifecycle identification mechanisms. It ensures robust, registry-based management of identifiers, versioning, and reusable metadata objects, delivering enterprise-grade metadata governance within every Colectica tool. This ensures that every metadata element, whether it is a variable, a question, or a concept, is uniquely identified, versioned, and managed.
DDI Lifecycle itself incorporates the ISO 11179 framework of Data Element Concepts. This synergy allows Colectica to offer a sophisticated "Variable Cascade," where a high-level Conceptual Variable is linked to a Represented Variable (defining the data type), which is finally tied to an Instance Variable in a specific dataset. This structure provides unparalleled clarity and searchability across different research projects.
Colectica's deep, standards-based architecture ensures that your metadata is not only richly documented but also highly interoperable, reusable, and ready for the future of data-driven research and AI-ready datasets with metadata context. Utilize ISO/PAS 25955 DDI-Lifecycle and ISO 11179 standards to provide the semantic "ground truth" that allows AI agents to understand your data.
